VMP is hiring a Director of Nursing!

SUMMARY
Assume 24-hour accountability for the management of nursing services in the SNF.  The DON directs and supervises professional and paraprofessional personnel rendering client care services. Responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of activities that directly affect the nursing department and overall resident care.   Fosters public relations for the company by consulting and planning with other licensed entities within the company regarding staffing needs, and communicates the concept of quality client care to the staff and general community. Maintains the department policies and procedures in accordance with clinical standards and State and Federal Regulations. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Planning – responsible for the overall direction, coordination and evaluation of the nursing department in the Skilled Nursing Facility.
1.   Establishing nursing department goals and objectives.
2.   Plan and implement scheduling patterns to meet resident needs.
3.   Maintain flexibility in self-scheduling in order to assess 24-hour, 365-days nursing care delivery.
4.   Support and participate in changes involving the department.
5.   Relief supervisor/staff coverage, as needed.

Coach, Teach and provide Leadership to staff.

  1. Lead the skilled nursing management team in the most effective manner taking into account resident needs and budget constraints. 

2.   Give clear directives and constructive feedback.
3.   Supervise performance of associates through orientation, disciplines when necessary, and probation and annual evaluations on a timely basis.
4.   Utilization of clinical and managerial expertise in developing and educating staff.
5.   Interview and appropriate selection of new associates.
6.   Demonstrates ability to partner within the nursing department and with other disciplines and department heads.
7.  Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintains relationships that are equally respectful to all. 
8.)  Conduct staff meetings as appropriate.
9.)  Responsible for encouraging positive morale, retention of staff, and participating in recruitment and development of nursing employees. 
10.) Lead with a creative approach to problem solving departmental and organizational strategies.      
     
Regulatory Compliance
1.   Familiarity with all State and Federal regulations pertaining to the SNF.
2.   Review/investigation of incident and accident reports.
3.   Review/evaluate medication errors.
4.   Support and perform in accordance with administrative and departmental policies and procedures.
5.   Participate in policy and procedure development and all survey processes.
6.   Maintain safety standards and institute safety precautions as appropriate.

Responsible for keeping current in State and Federal codes affecting long-term care and standards of nursing practice.
1.   Take responsibility for ongoing self-development.
2.   Keep current in health care issues.
3.   Current CPR certification.
4.   Stay current in professional organizations.
5.   Attend mandatory in house education 

Clinical Expertise
1.   Make resident visits to assess physical and emotional status to determine nursing care needs and monitor implementation of appropriate nursing intervention.
2.   Demonstration of effective problem solving.

3.   Review documentation to ensure adherence to policies and procedures and State and Federal guidelines.
4.   Evaluate levels of resident care.
5.   Perform chart audits, including monitoring of physician and nursing orders to ensure they are carried out correctly and documented properly.
6.   Participate in quality improvement programs.
7.   Maintaining high standards of care and quality measures. 

Communication
1.    Facilitate communication with/between departments, Administrator, physicians to monitor visitation schedules, residents/families.
2.   Keep Administrator informed of staffing needs, personnel concerns, environmental/equipment needs, unusual or critical events involving residents, staff, or families.
3.   Establish environment in which staff, resident and visitor relations are fostered.
4.   Readily share ideas for improved services.
5.   Use proper lines of communication.

Budget/Finance

  1. Staffing levels maintained daily at budgeted levels.
  2. Monitor time cards for accuracy.
  3. Monitor and control expenses against approved plan.
  4. Review budget variances with Administrator.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Leads nursing department and manages direct reports who supervise all employees in the Nursing Department.  Also responsible for the performance of non-supervisory employees in the Nursing Department.  Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
